Sheffield Hallam University’s Heart of the Campus scheme, designed by Sheffield-based international architects, HLM, has won two further awards.

The £24m scheme designed by HLM won the award for ‘Best Student Experience’ at the recent Education Estates Awards and is a Regional Finalist for the Civic Trust Awards. The project is now going forward for consideration for the National 2016 Civic Trust Awards, which will be announced in March 2016.

HLM designed the scheme for the university’s Collegiate Crescent Campus, which was constructed in a conservation area on a very restricted site with limited access. The building — incorporating a three-storey atrium — was designed to accommodate various social and learning activities, including a new café, open learning zones and IT areas, alongside bespoke world class teaching spaces for the departments of Law, Criminology and Criminal Justice and Psychology, Sociology and Politics.

Commenting on the recognition the scheme has achieved, director Nick Beecroft said: “We were all delighted to have one of our schemes recognised at the Civic Trust Awards and to have it named as the ‘Best Student Experience’ at the Education Estates annual award ceremony. These awards build on the accolade that RIBA bestowed on the scheme earlier this year.

“Such recognition reflects positively on the whole company and demonstrates our commitment to designing landmark schemes that are not only visually stunning but are entirely fit-for-purpose.”
